Poor ol' Biff

[update: February 28, 2008]

I made it to Flagstaff safely but was in shock on the drive up from Phoenix, as the elevation number signs got higher…so did the snow banks! Running the last few days has been challenging due to the lack of oxygen and snowy trails but I can tell that after 5 weeks here sea level seem much easier than when I left. Thankfully today is 60 degrees and there is snow melting everywhere. This town is a small, friendly ski town with a very mellow vibe. There are many runners training up here and supposedly the Canadian triathlon team arrived today. Yesterday started off with the weekly “Bagel Run” beginning from the local bagel shop, Biff’s Bagels. This shop is named exclusively in honor of Biff, the deceased dog belonging to the owners of the shop. Lining the walls inside the shop are hundreds of framed pictures of other deceased Flagstaff dogs. A little strange and a little sad but at the same time very unique….dead dogs deserve some lovin too!

I will have some pictures up (hopefully displaying more melted snow!) within the next few days….

110

[update: February 12, 2008]

Last week I ran 110 miles….phew! The week included a track workout, hill repeats, a long run and a tempo run. I am down to a 90 mile week this week as I am running the Austin half marathon on Sunday. Surprisingly the week came easier than I thought….I have to say training for an Ironman is much harder and way more time consuming than marathon training. I run early in the morning and again later in the evening so I have the middle of the day to rest, catch up on other things and actually take my dog to play at the park. I am sure there are people out there who are thinking, stick to what you are good at! For me, that would be the easy way out, I really enjoy taking on this new challenge and am enjoying pushing my body in a different way than I have before. I am leaving for Flagstaff in two weeks to get in 5 weeks of altitude training there. I want to get to the line in Boston as prepared as possible so that I can really enjoy having a good race and having the capacity to do so…

In the meantime I have been experimental baking and cooking. Due to my gluten allergy, it is so frustrating to be limited to foods that taste like dirt. Most gluten free packaged goods lack the “fluffiness” and taste of normal baked breads and foods. They also contain weird substances such as xylitol..I had a gluten free brownie the other day touting it was sugar free but this was the main ingredient. YUK! I am getting so inspired by this that I am thinking of starting my new line of baked gluten free treats. Any takers?

Jenny's Light

[update: February 01, 2008]

I just got home from a TYR photo shoot in Huntington Beach, CA. Becky Lavelle was also there for the shoot and we talked about the foundation she is starting to raise awareness for postpartum depression. It will be called “Jenny’s Light” in honor of her twin sister and nephew she recently and tragically lost. The foundation has been formed to raise awareness of this disorder and to help women who are experiencing this cope with their suffering.

Please visit Becky’s website www.beckylavelle.com to make a donation and keep Becky and her family in your prayers. She is such a sweet, kindhearted person and my heart goes out to her for all that she is going through right now.
